This past weekend in Portland, there were three great examples of people helping those who help others -- three small, grassroots fundraising events to benefit people and animals. Our little vegan grocery in Portland, Food Fight! Grocery, finished up its "Kick Out the Jams" fundraiser to benefit a local farmed animal sanctuary. Shoppers and supporters were asked to drop off their still functioning but no-longer-needed DVDs and music CDs, which were then sold, and the cash was given to the sanctuary. A little PR, a lot of people passing on something they no longer needed, and it raised $800 to help the animals.
This weekend was also Portland's Vegan Bake Sale for Haiti, which called upon area lovers of baked goods to bring their vegan goodies, so that other lovers of baked goods could buy them. The single-afternoon event raised more than $3,000. (So far, with other such events in other cities, the amount raised is more than $25,000.) The money raised in Portland was donated to MercyCorps (which is based here).
Also going on was a fundraiser for Fences for Fido, a local, all-volunteer group that works to improve the lives of dogs living outdoors by offering services such as building fences, removing chains, providing shelter, and offering free spay/neuter services.
All of these events were organized by small numbers of people in a short amount of time, working passionate to help organizations who help those in need. Definitely part of what a humane world looks like!
What kinds of grassroots work is going on in your community?
