Mention immigration and immigrants in the U.S. and often there will quickly follow a host of passionate comments. Ask students their views, and too often they merely parrot what they've heard at home. Immigration is an important and complex issue that requires patient, in-depth discussion and exploration. Here are a few resources that can help.- The Line Between Us: Teaching About the Border and Mexican Immigration by Bill Bigelow - A helpful guide from our friends at Rethinking Schools that offers imaginative and creative teaching ideas and resources for exploring and analyzing "the immigrant experience and the drama of border life."
- "The Human Face of Immigration" by Maureen Costello, from the Spring 2011 edition of Teaching Tolerance - An article that explores two teachers' methods for exploring family, immigration, tolerance, and diversity. Some great ideas here.
- "Immigration Myths" -- A lesson plan from Teaching Tolerance that uses a carousel platform for analyzing and exploring myths and realities about immigrants in the U.S.
- The New Americans - A PBS Independent Lens series that follows a diverse group of immigrants & refugees as they learn what it means "to be new Americans in the 21st century." The site includes a variety of resources, including lesson plans for educators.
