Educators: Help Prepare Your Students for Their Future

Today’s youth are hungry to learn about meaningful, empowering, and relevant issues that connect to their daily lives, and they're passionate about exploring solutions to our global challenges. As one young 12th grader said when she learned about humane education, "We should have been learning this since kindergarten!"

At IHE we offer teachers and community educators a chance to help prepare students for the future with our popular month-long online course, Teaching for a Positive Future (the next session runs February 7 – March 4, 2011).

Participants join our course looking for insights, support and strategies for exploring education as a tool for social change and for nurturing their students to become leaders and changemakers for a healthy, just, compassionate world, and 30 days later, they’re inspired, empowered and already making meaningful changes in their teaching and curriculum.

What are participants saying about Teaching for a Positive Future? Here are a couple examples:

“Class has only been on for three days and I am already tweaking what I do in the classroom!”
~ Christy Lochary, teacher, Louisville, CO

“Excellent course! The activities and resources were appropriate and useful for a broad range of educators.” ~ Stacy Hoult-Saros, Associate Professor of Spanish, Valparaiso University, IN

“I really enjoyed the course and think that it would be valuable for any teacher to take it.”
~ Mark Messer, high school foreign student coordinator, Blue Hill, ME

Teaching for a Positive Future is designed to deepen educators’ understanding of the interconnected issues of environmental preservation, animal protection, human rights, and media & culture. The course challenges educators to think creatively and critically about integrating global issues into their classrooms and communities and offers techniques and ideas to help educators revolutionize and revitalize their students’ education and to make their teaching even more rewarding and meaningful.

During the course, participants examine important questions, such as:

• What is education for?
• Is my teaching as relevant as I want it to be to the world my students are inheriting?
• How can I help my students connect the dots between their learning in class and the larger
world?

Teaching for a Positive Future includes a downloadable course curriculum, an interactive online discussion forum, phone mentoring and support from the course faculty, and a copy of the course book, The Power and Promise of Humane Education by IHE President, Zoe Weil. Continuing Education Credits are available.

If you're an educator, please consider signing up. If you're not, please forward this information to educators you know.

We can truly create a humane, healthy world through education, but only if we work together.
